Company
Founded in 2002, Disability Options Network (DON), the Center for Independent Living (CIL) serves Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Mercer, and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania. Staff is currently in three locations – New Castle serving the northern counties, Penn Hills serving Allegheny County, and Jennette serving Armstrong and Westmoreland counties.
DON is a non-profit organization that facilitates self-determination, freedom of choice, and barrier-free access to the community.
As a CIL, the organization must be consumer-controlled, meaning 51% of the board, staff, and volunteers must be individuals with disabilities. Since Disability Options Network is a federally funded CIL, 5 core services that define the CIL must be provided. Those services include Advocacy, Information & Referral, Peer Support, Skills Training, and Transition Services (from nursing home to community, school to employment, or just adolescence to adulthood).
In addition to the five core services, DON offers fair housing training and consultation, emergency preparedness training, employment services through the Ticket to Work Program, education advocacy support, recycled durable medical equipment program, and other services offered throughout the 7-county service area.
